Terms of Service
Last updated: October 2, 2026
In short: The Big Picture is a research tool for financial professionals. It shows how spending and saving plans would have fared in the past; it does not predict the future and is not investment advice. One subscription is for one person. You may share the reports you create with your clients, but not the underlying data. You can cancel at any time.
1. About these terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of The Big Picture safe withdrawal rate program, including the website at app.investmentsillustrated.com, the reports it produces and any related services (together, the "Service"). The Service is provided by Investments Illustrated Solutions, Inc., a British Columbia company doing business as Investments Illustrated ("Investments Illustrated", "we", "us", "our").
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you use the Service on behalf of a firm, you confirm that you are authorized to accept these Terms for that firm, and "you" includes the firm. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. The Service and your account
The Service is intended for financial advisors and other professionals who work with investors. You must be at least 18 years old and provide accurate information when you create your account.
Each subscription is for one named person. You may not share your sign-in details or let anyone else use your account. To protect accounts, we may limit the number of devices or sessions that can use an account at the same time. For subscriptions covering several people, contact us.
You are responsible for keeping your password secure and for activity under your account. Tell us promptly at the address below if you believe your account has been used without your permission.
3. Free trial, subscriptions and billing
- Free trial. New accounts receive a 14-day free trial with full access. No payment details are needed to start. If you do not choose a plan by the end of the trial, your access ends and you are not charged.
- Plans. Subscriptions are billed monthly or yearly, in advance, at the prices shown when you subscribe. Prices are in US dollars and exclude applicable taxes, which are added where required.
- Automatic renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel. If you add payment details during your trial, your first charge is made when the trial ends.
- Cancelling. You can cancel at any time from Settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access until then. Payments already made are not refundable, including for partly used periods, except where required by law or stated in section 8.
- Changing plans. You may switch between monthly and yearly billing. When switching from monthly to yearly, the unused part of the current month is credited.
- Failed payments. If a payment fails, we will notify you and retry. If payment is not made within about two weeks, we may suspend or cancel your subscription.
- Price changes. We may change our prices. We will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before a new price applies to your subscription, and it will take effect at your next renewal.
- Payment processing. Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not receive or store your full card number.
4. Your use of results and reports
You may use the results, charts and reports produced by the Service in the ordinary course of your professional work, including sharing reports with your clients and prospective clients, provided the reports are shared in full or with their disclosures intact.
You remain solely responsible for the advice you give and the decisions you and your clients make. In particular, you are responsible for:
- deciding whether any result or report is suitable and appropriate for a particular client;
- complying with the laws, regulations and firm policies that apply to you, including any rules on the use of hypothetical or back-tested performance in client communications; and
- the information you enter, including any client names or details. Only enter information you are entitled to use, and do not enter sensitive personal information such as account numbers or government identification numbers.
5. Data, software and intellectual property
The Service, its software, design, methods and content, and the historical market data it uses (the "Data") are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by copyright and other laws. The Data is licensed from third parties, including the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) and Global Financial Data, Inc. (see section 13). We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service for your own professional purposes during your subscription.
You may not, and may not help anyone else to:
- copy, download, extract, scrape or redistribute the Data or any substantial part of it, or use automated tools to access the Service;
- use the Service or the Data to create, verify or correct any other data set, index, model or financial product, including funds and index-linked securities;
- copy, decompile, reverse-engineer or attempt to discover the Service's software, calculation methods or source code, or build a competing product;
- resell, sublicense or provide the Service to others, or use it on behalf of anyone other than you and your firm's clients; or
- interfere with or try to gain unauthorized access to the Service or its systems.
The Big Picture is a registered trademark of Investments Illustrated. Your logo and the information you enter remain yours; you allow us to use them only to provide the Service to you.
6. Not investment advice: historical results only
The Service is a research and illustration tool. Nothing in it is investment, tax, legal or financial advice, or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security or to follow any strategy.
- Hypothetical results. Results are hypothetical. They show how a stated plan would have performed in past periods, using historical index returns and inflation, from January 1926 to the most recent month for which data is available. They are not the results of any actual account or investment.
- Past performance. Past performance does not indicate or guarantee future results. Future returns, inflation and market conditions may be worse than any period in the historical record. A withdrawal rate that was safe historically may not be safe in the future, and some research suggests that market valuations at the start of retirement can affect future safe withdrawal rates.
- Indices. The asset classes are represented by indices. An investment cannot be made directly in an index. Results assume the reinvestment of all income, deduct only the fees you specify, and do not reflect taxes, trading costs or other expenses unless stated.
- Asset class risks. Stocks have been more volatile than the other asset classes shown. Government bonds and Treasury bills are backed by the U.S. government as to timely payment of principal and interest; stocks are not guaranteed. International and emerging markets stocks carry additional risks, including currency fluctuations, foreign taxation, economic and political risks, lower liquidity, and different accounting standards. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss.
- Data. The Data comes from third-party sources believed to be reliable, but it may contain errors or omissions and may be revised.
7. Availability and changes to the Service
We work to keep the Service available and accurate, but it may occasionally be unavailable for maintenance or for reasons beyond our control. We may update, add or remove features, and update the Data, at any time.
8. Ending the Service
We may suspend or end your access if you breach these Terms, including by sharing your account or misusing the Data, or if required by law. Where the breach can be fixed, we will normally tell you first and give you a reasonable opportunity to fix it.
If we decide to discontinue the Service, we will give you reasonable advance notice and refund the unused portion of any prepaid subscription.
After your subscription ends, we keep your account and saved work for at least 12 months, so they are there if you subscribe again; after that we may delete them. You can ask us to delete them sooner. See our Privacy Policy for details.
9. Disclaimer
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service, the Data and all results and reports are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement or uninterrupted availability.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law: (a) neither we nor our data providers will be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, clients, data or goodwill, arising from or related to the Service, the Data, or any decision made using them; and (b) our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim.
11. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Investments Illustrated, its directors, officers, employees and data providers from any claims, losses and costs, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your breach of these Terms, your misuse of the Service or the Data, or advice, reports or communications you give to your clients.
12. Emails
We send emails that are needed to run your account, such as sign-in links, receipts, billing notices and important changes to the Service or these Terms. We send product news and other marketing emails only as permitted by law, and every such email includes a way to unsubscribe.
13. Data sources

14. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we will tell you by email or in the Service at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you continue to use the Service after a change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms; if you do not agree, you may cancel your subscription.
15. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. You and we agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of British Columbia, except that either of us may seek an injunction in any court to protect intellectual property or confidential information.
16. General
These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. If we do not enforce a right, we have not waived it. You may not transfer your account or these Terms without our consent; we may transfer them to a successor to our business. Neither party is responsible for delays caused by events beyond its reasonable control.
